A new special Silicon Border crossing between the U.S. and Mexico has been identified by State and Federal planning departments of both the U.S. and Mexico for over 10 years.
A border crossing with the most advanced technology will be submitted for the final approval process as soon as the potential traffic warrants the expenditure at the North east corner of the site. CALTRANS, California's highway design and build agency has preliminary proposals to connect this crossing to Interstate 8 at Drew Road. In California border infrastructure can be paid for by toll collection, eliminating the former wait for new border crossings to be budget driven. Further Homeland Security has streamlined the approval for new border crossings to better match the needs of commerce.
Currently there are three existing border crossings in the Municipality of Mexicali.
The U.S. currently offers special "Sentri Pass" for frequent crossers that enable them to use lanes at the border crossing built especially for this purpose enabling them to cross in less than 15 minutes. Companies can also qualify for similar processing of their truck traffic. The TSA approval is based on a review of the integrity of the Companies shipping and export operations. This program enables "just in time" delivery to customers in the U.S. by eliminating waits at the border. This efficient approach cannot be duplicated for the delivery of products to the U.S. from any other country except Canada.
