Silicon Border’s demand for skilled professionals is fed by high quality educational institutions. Mexicali graduates over 6,000 students a year.

Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC), is an eight-campus technology university headquartered in Mexicali. The university educates about 60,000 students, and with 16 percent comprising of engineers.

In the near future, Silicon Border will be opening an engineering campus onsite.

Besides UABC, other Mexicali colleges include:

CETYS Universidad, a private technology focused institution with programs in computer science, industrial, cybernetic electronics, mechanical and mechatronics engineering

Instituto Tecnológico de Mexicali (ITM), a federal university offering bachelors, masters and PhD programs

Universidad Politécnica de Baja California (UPBC), a State University with programs in Energy, Mechatronics, Manufacturing and IT Engineering




Another neighboring educational site within proximity to Mexicali is UC San Diego, recognized as one of the top 10 public universities by U.S. News and World Report. UCSD offers more than 100 undergraduate majors in six disciplinary areas with Engineering representing one of the top 3 programs.

“Easy to recruit USA engineers”: Why? What would make them choose Mexicali over U.S. locations?

US Engineers are available in Mexicali will enjoy expatriate benefit such as lower taxes and lower cost of living while being able to be involved in manufacturing process no longer possible in the USA. Baja California provides many recreational benefits not available in most of the United States. Surfing or snowboarding in the same day. Does “scholarship assistance come from the government or university? Is it for worker training or also other things such as research / tech transfer, etc.?

The Scholarship assistance is an incentive program that comes from the government to support the personnel training on the start of the new company/process or on the job training.

The program goes from 1 to 3 months of the minimum wage per employee and it is paid on a monthly basis per employee attendance. The formal name in Mexico for this incentive is called BECATE.
